How it plays

Hexellent gives you a board made of hexagonal cells and a small supply of stacks to place on it. Each stack is a pile of thin hexagon tiles in one or more colours. When you drop a stack next to another whose top layer shares a colour, the matching tiles slide across and gather on one pile.

Once enough tiles of one colour sit together, that layer clears and frees up space. Clearing is the whole point: the board is small, and every stack you place without merging takes a cell you may need later. Poki describes the board as a three-dimensional grid, and in practice the height of each pile tells you at a glance how close it is to clearing.

The satisfying part is the chain. A single drop can pull tiles from one neighbour, which exposes a new colour underneath, which then matches another neighbour. Poki calls these combos, and planning for them is what separates a comfortable level from one that fills up.

Some levels offer boosters that help when the board is nearly full. The game moves forward level by level, so you can stop between boards without losing your place in a run.

Five things to try early

  • Before you drop a stack, look at what sits under the top colour of its neighbours. The best move is often the one that reveals a useful colour, not the one that clears right now.

  • Keep one corner of the board loose. A free cell away from the busy middle gives you somewhere to park a stack that fits nowhere else.

  • Mixed stacks are harder to place than single-colour ones. Put them where both of their colours already have neighbours.

  • Save boosters for a board that is truly stuck rather than using them to speed up an easy level.

  • If a level fills up, replay it and change only your first two placements. Early choices shape the whole board.

Who it suits, and what to weigh

It suits anyone who likes quiet, thoughtful puzzles and short breaks between tasks. There is no reading or violence, and the rules are easy to explain to a younger player.

Later levels demand real planning, so the relaxed feel of the opening boards does not last forever.

—

Drag controls are comfortable with a mouse and slightly fiddlier on a small phone screen.
